Mahavir Janma Kalyanak is popularly known as Mahavir Jayanti important festival of Jainism. It is celebrated generally as the birthday of the Lord Mahavir who is the last and the 24th saint and last Tirthankara of the present avasarpini.

According to the Georgian calendar, this festival is celebrated between March and April.

According to janaisim religious text as it is believed that the lord Mahavir was born on the 13 days of a bright half-moon in the month of Chaitra according to the Hindu calendar in 599 BCE. It is believed that he was born in kundalpur a type of a village in Champaran District of Bihar.

It was a type of democratic village where the people use to select there a leader or king by-election or voting. The Ganarajya kingdom Vajji. king was the king of the kingdom. The capital of the kingdom was Vaishali.

Mahavir was popularly known as Vardhman which means that one who grows because when he was born he bring much prosperity with him hence the villagers called him this name.

The Vardhman when he occurred in his mother womb he brings a lot of wealth, prosperity, peace and harmony. Hence his parents kept his Vardhman.

Mahavir was born in Ahalya bhumi where it was barren land for about 100 hundred and there he was born and it becomes the fertile land.

Some even say he was born in kundigram or lachhuar or the Nalanda. His birthplace is unknown to Lord Mahavir. He was born to king Siddhartha and the queen Triphala.

The Lord Mahavir was married to princess Yashoda. They had a baby daughter Priyadarshini and later his daughter got married to Jamali.

Mahavir Janma Kalyanak or Mahavir Jayanti is a very significant and special festival of Jain people. Jain people celebrate this festival in a very special way and with great enthusiasm, love, and happiness as the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavira, the most special lord of Jain. And all Jain people worship Lord Mahavir Swami ji with great devotion.

At the festival of Mahavir Jayanti or Mahavir Janma Kalyanak, there is a lot of enthusiasm among the Jain people and special food is prepared and the temples are decorated in a beautiful way. And Jain people are ready to eat without garlic and onion.

All Jains prepare food in a special way without onion and garlic and follow a sattvic diet always. And according to all traditions and complete devotion of Jain people, they celebrate this festival with great love and happiness.

This festival of Bhagwan Mahavir, Mahavir Janma Kalyanak is celebrated every year by all Jain people. People of Jainism celebrate this festival of Mahavir Swami every year all over India. A story behind the birth of Bhagwan Mahavir and how his life became so great that he became the most important lord of Jainism.

Bhagwan Mahavir was born in 599 AD at Kundagram in Bihar. And Lord Mahavir Swami was born into a royal family. Bhagwan Mahavir’s father’s name was Siddharth and his mother’s name was Trishala. The parents of Bhagwan Mahavir were both the king and queen of the Licchavi Dynasty.

According to Jain scriptures, It is said that after the birth of Bhagwan Mahavir, Indradev anointed Lord Mahavira with the water of the ocean on a mountain called Sumeru. This anointment of Lord Mahavir Swami and this celebration is called Birth Kalyanak, so this festival is called ‘Mahavir Janma Kalyanak’.

According to the beliefs of Jainism, it is said that when Lord Mahavir was in the womb of Trishala, the mother of Lord Mahavira, then he had great and good dreams about Lord Mahavir. And it was through the help of these dreams his parents learned that this child will grow up to become a Tirthankara. And this was also true in the future.

And from the very beginning, Bhagwan Mahavira was very interested in the beliefs and texts of Jainism. And when Lord Mahavir was the crown prince and at a young age, he started doing austerities, and then Lord Mahavir went out in search of the truth. And in the same way, Bhagwan Mahavir did great things in his life and also gave very good messages to the people, and inspired so many people with great work throughout his life.

In pursuit of his truth, Bhagwan Mahavir Swami gave good education to the people and gave great messages, and inspired a lot of people by doing great work in his life. The great Lord Mahavir Swami had also given the message to the whole world that ‘non-violence is the ultimate religion’. This is a very popular statement which Bhagwan Mahavir gave from the teachings of his life.

The idol of Mahavir is carried out chariot in the procession called rath yatra during this yatra people singing religious hymen.

The most important place where this celebration happens with great enthusiast is Gujarat and Rajasthan. Where Mahavir Janam kalyanak is celebrated. Where Gujarat is said to behave the greatest number of Jain shrines and as Gujarat have the holy places for Jain people they also arrange for the fairs for the pilgrims over there.

As India is a place where festival means decoration whatever the events if it is related religions then there have to be flowers, flags and diyas for the decorations of the temple, holy places and even the city.

The idol of Mahavir is given a bath before the starting of the celebration and then puja following by the procession. On this day they make procession using idol of the lord Mahavir.

There is tradition to give food cloths and necessary things to needy people .people also do acts to demonstrate life of mahavir. They also perform meditation and offer prayer.

Why we Celebrate Mahavir Janma Kalyanak?

The festival of Mahavir Janma Kalyanak is celebrated by all the Jain people because on this day Lord Mahavir Swami was born. And at that time when Bhagwan Mahavir was a child, he was named ‘Vardhaman’. And this festival of Lord Mahavir is celebrated with great enthusiasm by people of all Jain religions.

According to the beliefs of the people of Jainism, Lord Mahavir Swami was born on the 13th day of Chaitra month ( March – April ) according to the Hindu calendar. Mahavir Bhagwan was also the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism and he did penance at his young age and went out in search of the truth of nature.

Mahavira Bhagavan became a very great person and in life, he only meditated and tried to know the importance of life and the universal nature truth. And learned a lot in his life through Jain scriptures and also gave many good lessons to people, which was very important for people.

Bhagwan Mahavir Swami had started penance from his young age and he meditated for 12 years. And at a very young age, he left his family and house.

How we Celebrate Mahavir Janma Kalyanak?

On this festival, all the Jain people clean their houses and decorate their houses by bathing in the morning and wearing nice clothes. And all the temples of Jain people are decorated very beautifully. And with great enthusiasm and happiness each and every preparation of this festival is done and all the devotees of Lord Mahavira go to the temple on this day and worship them.

On this festival, idols of Lord Mahavir are anointed in all Jain temples and they are placed in a palanquin. And on this day all the devotees of Bhagwan Mahavir Swami keep fast for them. In many places, Mahavir Bhagwan is seated in a palanquin with great enthusiasm and Tableaux is also organized.

Hence, the festival of Mahavir Janma Kalyanak or Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated every year with great pomp, joy and full devotion among the people of Jainism.
